Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic Syndrome

Hi Everyone!
Hard to believe we are on our last day of November 2023. Our culinary and clinical practitioners combine their knowledge on common food trends with an evidence-based food-demo presentation. Our recipe for this month was for Smoked Salmon Pinwheels prepared by our Executive Chef. The layout above includes the following ingredients:
- Reduced fat cream cheese (low-fat/lower calorie version)
- Fresh Dill Weed (excellent for flavor, reduces excess gas, calms hiccups)
- Spinach Whole grain tortilla (whole grain has fiber which aids in filtering cholesterol build up)
- Smoked Salmon (packed with protein, polluted with essential omega 3 fatty acids- our bodies don't make these!)
- Red Bell Pepper (full of antioxidants, boosts beautiful skin and immunity)
We tied this recipe into a Heart Healthy Recipe for individuals with Metabolic Syndrome. This is just a fancy way of saying that a person has at least 3 of the following risk factor conditions, which essentially contribute to cardiovascular/heart problems/DM or stroke:
- High Blood Sugar
- Low HDL (good cholesterol)
- High Triglycerides
- Large Waste Circumference (wider than hips)- overweight/obese
- High Bood Pressure
*We want to consider foods with low salt, no added sugar and baked/broiled/steamed options. Consider the traditional "DASH diet" and "Heart Healthy" food selections. Aim for at least ½ of your grains be whole, 2.5 cups of fruits and 2 cups vegetables daily.
Reduce Your Risk Factors:
- Losing excess weight
- Increasing physical activity
- Following a Heart Healthy diet
- Reducing alcohol intake
- Quit Smoking
- Working with your RD or healthcare professionals!
